Grok’s Deepfake Disaster: xAI Under Fire for Toxic AI Image Editor

xAI’s Chatbot, Grok, has sparked global outrage following the launch of its image editing feature. The tool has been exploited to generate a flood of non-consensual sexualized deepfakes, including explicit images of real women and inappropriate depictions of children. Reports indicate the AI readily complied with disturbing prompts, such as putting individuals in lingerie or compromising positions.

The backlash has reached the highest levels of government. UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer condemned the content as “disgusting,” demanding that X (formerly Twitter) remove the material and warning of government action if the platform fails to self-regulate. While X has introduced minor restrictions—requiring a paid subscription to generate images via mentions—the core image editor remains accessible, drawing criticism from policymakers across Europe and the US who are questioning whether existing laws can effectively halt the abuse.
