India Issues Ultimatum to Elon Musk’s X Over Grok’s ‘Obscene’ AI Output

The Indian government has intensified its scrutiny of artificial intelligence platforms, issuing a strict ultimatum to Elon Musk’s X (formerly Twitter). The Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) has demanded that the platform address concerns regarding Grok, the company’s generative AI chatbot. The government has flagged the presence of ‘obscene’ and potentially unlawful content within Grok’s responses.

Authorities have given X a tight deadline of 72 hours to submit a detailed action-taken report. This move highlights the growing friction between rapid AI deployment and global content moderation regulations. As nations worldwide grapple with the safety implications of Large Language Models (LLMs), India is signaling a zero-tolerance approach to algorithmic irresponsibility. Failure to comply could lead to significant legal repercussions under the nation’s IT rules, putting pressure on Musk to prioritize local compliance over the platform’s ‘anti-woke’ design philosophy.
