There is a glaring double standard in Big Tech: X’s deepfake porn feature clearly violates Apple and Google App Store guidelines. Both companies have strict policies prohibiting non-consensual sexual content and the promotion of harmful misinformation. Yet, despite public outcry and clear breaches of their own terms of service, Tim Cook and Sundar Pichai have failed to pull the plug.
It is a moment of cowardice. While Apple and Google frequently ban smaller apps for minor infractions, they seem paralyzed when it comes to moderating a platform owned by the world’s richest man. By refusing to enforce their rules equally, they are complicit in the proliferation of non-consensual deepfakes. It raises a disturbing question: Do these CEOs actually stand for user safety, or are they simply afraid of Elon’s next tweet? The silence from Cupertino and Mountain View is deafening—and increasingly unethical.
