Tech Giants Under Fire: Why Apple and Google Won’t Ban X’s Deepfake Feature

A fierce controversy has erupted regarding the moderation policies of Apple and Google. Both companies are currently facing accusations of hypocrisy and cowardice for refusing to remove the social media platform X (formerly Twitter) from their app stores.

The core issue centers on X’s recent update to its Grok AI assistant. The tool now allows users to generate explicit, deepfake pornography with ease. Critics argue that this feature creates a massive surge in non-consensual intimate imagery (NCII) and violates the terms of service agreed upon by developers in both the Google Play Store and Apple App Store.

Despite clear guidelines prohibiting such content—and the routine removal of smaller apps for similar infractions—Tim Cook and Sundar Pichai have remained silent. This inaction suggests a double standard where the world’s wealthiest tech companies can bypass safety regulations that apply to everyone else, raising serious questions about accountability in the AI era.
