SpaceX has just received a significant regulatory boost from the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) to expand its growing Starlink constellation. The agency officially granted permission for the deployment of an additional 7,500 Gen2 satellites. This latest approval is a massive leap forward, pushing the total number of authorized second-generation spacecraft to 15,000 when combined with previous clearances.
This expansion is critical for SpaceX as it aims to bolster bandwidth capacity and extend reliable high-speed internet coverage to previously underserved polar and remote regions. While the FCC authorized this significant tranche, they temporarily paused a decision on the full constellation of nearly 30,000 satellites to evaluate space safety and orbital debris risks. Nevertheless, with Gen2 satellites boasting more advanced processing capabilities than their predecessors, Starlink is poised to significantly tighten its grip on the global satellite internet market.
