Betterment Glitch Sends Users $10,000 Crypto Scam Message

In a bizarre and alarming turn of events, the popular automated investing platform Betterment accidentally pushed a notification to users that looked indistinguishable from a classic crypto scam. On Friday, customers received a message urging them to send $10,000 to specific Bitcoin and Ethereum wallets, with the dubious promise to “triple your crypto.”

The message, which read “Betterment is giving back!” and referenced a “limited time” offer to celebrate a “best-performing year,” was quickly flagged by users on Reddit. Betterment responded via an X (formerly Twitter) thread, admitting that the alert was sent via a compromised “third-party system” and was an “unauthorized message.” While the company claims this was a technical mishap rather than an internal heist, it serves as a stark reminder of the vulnerabilities in financial supply chains.
