Betterment App Hack: Users Promised ‘Triple Crypto’ in $10k Scam

Robo-advisor giant Betterment suffered a major security embarrassment on Friday after its official application pushed a blatant cryptocurrency scam to users. According to reports on Reddit and X, customers received a notification urging them to send $10,000 to specific Bitcoin and Ethereum wallets.

The message, which promised to “triple your crypto,” claimed to be a celebration of the company’s “best-performing year yet.” While some dismissed the obvious scam immediately, others feared their accounts had been compromised.

Betterment responded via social media, confirming the message was “unauthorized” and sent via a compromised “third-party system.” This incident highlights the growing risks of app notification infrastructure vulnerabilities, where even trusted financial platforms can be hijacked to distribute fraudulent phishing attempts to thousands of users instantly.
