Betterment App Glitch Prompts Users to ‘Send $10k Crypto’ in Massive Security Fail

In a shocking lapse of security, the robo-advisor Betterment accidentally pushed a notification to users on Friday that looked like a classic crypto scam.

According to reports on Reddit, users received an urgent message with the subject line “Bryan: Betterment is giving back!” It promised to “triple your crypto” if users transferred $10,000 to specific Bitcoin and Ethereum wallets.

Betterment later admitted via an X (Twitter) thread that this was an “unauthorized message” sent via a compromised “third-party system.” While the company claims it was an accident, the incident raises serious concerns about the security protocols governing customer communications within fintech apps. It serves as a stark reminder to users to verify official communications directly through apps rather than acting on push notifications promising instant wealth.
