Betterment App Glitch? $10,000 Crypto Scam Alert Sparks Security Concerns

Betterment, a popular automated investing service, found itself in hot water this Friday after users received a terrifying notification: a prompt to send $10,000 to unspecified Bitcoin and Ethereum wallets.

The message, which claimed the company would “triple your crypto,” was quickly flagged by users on Reddit as a blatant scam. In a surprising twist, the legitimate funds weren’t stolen by a direct breach; rather, Betterment confirmed via an X (formerly Twitter) thread that the message was an “unauthorized” push sent through a compromised “third-party system.”

While the request promised massive returns for a limited time, it serves as a stark reminder of the vulnerabilities in supply chain management. Even trusted fintech platforms are at risk when relying on external vendors for communication. Betterment has since labeled the incident a third-party error, but for users, seeing a request for $10k in crypto from their own bank app is a harrowing experience that undermines trust in digital finance security.
