In a shocking security lapse, the robo-advisor giant Betterment accidentally pushed a fraudulent promotion to its users, sparking fears of a massive platform compromise. On Friday, customers received alarming push notifications and emails promising to “triple your crypto” in exchange for a $10,000 deposit to specific Bitcoin and Ethereum wallets.
The message, which read “Betterment is giving back,” appeared to be a blatant phishing attempt originating from within the company’s official notification system. Screenshots shared on Reddit revealed the sophisticated nature of the scam, which capitalized on the platform’s reputation to solicit immediate funds.
Betterment’s support team quickly took to X (formerly Twitter) to clarify that this was an “unauthorized message” sent via a compromised “third-party system.” While the company assures users that their core accounts remain secure, the incident highlights the vulnerabilities inherent in relying on external vendors for critical customer communications.
