Apple & Google Under Fire: Why the X Deepfake Scandal Demands Immediate Action

Tech giants Apple and Google are facing a massive ethical dilemma regarding social media platform X, formerly known as Twitter. The controversy centers on the platform’s recent prioritization of X Premium subscriptions, which appears to have inadvertently—or deliberately—boosted the visibility of non-consensual deepfake pornography.

Despite clear violations of App Store and Play Store policies regarding sexually explicit content and non-consensual imagery, the AI-generated images of Taylor Swift spread rapidly across the platform. Critics argue that by failing to enforce their own Terms of Service and remove X from their app stores, CEOs Tim Cook and Sundar Pichai are effectively complicit in the proliferation of these deepfakes.

The situation highlights a broader accountability crisis in Big Tech. While Apple and Google frequently cite strict content moderation guidelines to police smaller apps, they seem hesitant to discipline a platform with the user base and influence of X. This double standard raises serious questions about the effectiveness of moderation protocols when applied to high-profile Elon Musk-owned entities, suggesting that enforcement often bows to political pressure rather than community safety standards.
