Xbox’s Towerborne Shifts Strategy: Drops Free-to-Play Model for Paid Premium Launch

In a significant strategic pivot, Xbox Game Studios and developer Stoic have announced that their upcoming side-scrolling action RPG, Towerborne, will no longer launch as a free-to-play title. Originally designed as a always-on online game, the project is shifting to a premium paid model featuring offline play.

Set to officially launch on February 26th, the game will now offer a complete, permanent experience rather than a live-service monetized one. Stoic CEO Trisha Stouffer explained that this transition required a deep structural rebuild over the last year to remove systems designed for constant connectivity. The new model promises offline capability alongside online co-op, signaling a move away from the modern trend of persistent online live-service games for this title.
