Xbox’s Towerborne Reverses Course: From Free-to-Play to Premium Offline Experience

In a significant pivot for Xbox Game Studios, the upcoming action RPG Towerborne is abandoning its original free-to-play model. Announcing the February 26th launch date, developer Stoic revealed that the game will transition to a premium, single-purchase title.

This decision stems from a desire to offer permanent ownership and flexibility to players. CEO Trisha Stouffer explained that the studio spent the last year rebuilding the game’s architecture, stripping away the requirement for constant connectivity. The result is a hybrid model that supports both offline play and online co-op without the constraints of a live-service economy.

By shifting away from the always-online formula, Stoic aims to deliver a more robust and complete experience at launch, prioritizing player freedom over recurring microtransactions.
