In a significant pivot for the highly anticipated Towerborne, developer Stoic Studio has announced that the side-scrolling action RPG will drop its planned free-to-play model. Instead of the originally planned always-online structure, the game launching on February 26th will be a premium title.
CEO Trisha Stouffer revealed via Xbox Wire that this decision required a year of “deep structural rebuilding.” The team reworked systems designed for constant connectivity to facilitate offline play. Players will now “own the complete experience permanently,” though the specific price point has not yet been disclosed. This move signals a potential industry fatigue with live-service monetization in favor of traditional, ownership-based gaming experiences.
