In a significant strategic pivot, Stoic Studio and Xbox Game Studios have announced that Towerborne will abandon its free-to-play roots ahead of its official launch on February 26th. Originally conceived as a live-service always-online title, the side-scrolling action RPG will now transition to a premium paid model featuring full offline capabilities.
Stoic CEO Trisha Stouffer revealed via Xbox Wire that this shift required ‘deep structural rebuilding’ over the last year to decouple the game from constant connectivity. This decision means players will now ‘own the complete experience permanently,’ offering a respite from modern gaming’s pervasive microtransactions. While the specific price point remains under wraps, the move highlights a growing industry trend where developers prioritize single-player integrity and consumer ownership over the volatile free-to-play economy.
