In a surprising pivot, Towerborne, the side-scrolling action RPG from Xbox Game Studios and developer Stoic, has announced it will abandon its free-to-play roots. Slated for an official launch on February 26th, the title will transition to a traditional premium model.
CEO Trisha Stouffer revealed that the studio spent the last year fundamentally rebuilding the game’s architecture. This move removes the requirement for constant connectivity, allowing players to own the complete experience permanently. The new model supports full offline play while maintaining online co-op functionality, addressing a common pain point for modern gamers seeking reliable access to their libraries. The title is currently available in early access.
