Xbox’s Towerborne Ditching Free-to-Play for Premium Offline Model

In a surprising pivot for the live-service landscape, Towerborne, the side-scrolling action RPG from Stoic and Xbox Game Studios, is abandoning its free-to-play roots. Ahead of its official launch on February 26th, developer Stoic announced that the game will transition to a traditional premium model.

CEO Trisha Stouffer revealed that the shift allows players to “own the complete experience permanently,” marking a significant departure from the always-online, microtransaction-heavy structure originally planned. This move necessitated a “deep structural rebuilding” over the last year to decouple the game from constant connectivity, ultimately prioritizing a solo-friendly, offline experience over the Games as a Service (GaaS) trend.
