Xbox’s Towerborne Ditching Free-to-Play for Premium Model at Launch

In a surprising pivot for the gaming industry, Xbox Game Studios and developer Stoic have announced that their upcoming side-scrolling action RPG, Towerborne, will drop its free-to-play roots in favor of a traditional premium payment model.

Originally designed as an always-online title, the game launches on February 26th as a paid product that offers a permanent, complete experience. This strategic shift required significant technical restructuring to decouple the game from constant internet connectivity. The update confirms that players will be able to enjoy the full Towerborne campaign offline, while still retaining the option for online co-op multiplayer. This move highlights a growing trend where studios prioritize player ownership and stability over the volatile, microtransaction-dependent economies typical of the live-service genre.
