In a significant pivot for the gaming industry, Towerborne, the upcoming side-scrolling action RPG from Stoic and Xbox Game Studios, is reversing its monetization strategy. Originally announced as a free-to-play, always-online title, the game will officially launch on February 26th as a premium paid product.
This shift offers immediate benefits to players, including the removal of the always-online requirement. CEO Trisha Stouffer confirmed that players will now own the complete experience permanently, unlocking the ability to play fully offline alongside online co-op modes. This transition required substantial structural rebuilding over the last year to dismantle systems designed for constant connectivity. By moving away from the free-to-play model, Stoic aims to deliver a more consistent user experience without the grind or microtransactions typical of the genre.
