In a surprising shift for Xbox Game Studios, the side-scrolling action RPG Towerborne is pivoting away from its original free-to-play model. Developer Stoic Studio announced that the game will officially launch on February 26th as a premium title, complete with offline functionality.
CEO Trisha Stouffer explained that this decision allows players to “own the complete experience permanently,” marking a significant departure from the always-online, live-service structure initially planned. The move required a “deep structural rebuilding” of the game’s systems over the last year to decouple them from constant connectivity. This change suggests a growing trend where developers prioritize player ownership and flexibility over the volatile, microtransaction-heavy economy of always-online titles.
