A firestorm of controversy has erupted regarding X (formerly Twitter) and its association with Elon Musk’s AI, Grok. Users have reportedly utilized the tool to generate non-consensual deepfake images of women and children, triggering a debate over platform responsibility.
Despite clear violations of developer guidelines—which prohibit content that is “offensive, insensitive, upsetting, intended to disgust, or just plain creepy”—neither Apple nor Google has removed X from their app stores. Critics argue this inaction exposes a spinelessness at the top of Silicon Valley.
The assertion is that Tim Cook and Sundar Pichai are prioritizing political maneuvering and fear of Musk over their stated ethical principles. By failing to enforce their own rules, they are effectively permitting the proliferation of AI-generated abuse to continue on one of the world’s largest platforms.
