A firestorm of controversy has erupted regarding X (formerly Twitter) and its continued presence on major app stores. Following reports that users are utilizing the platform’s Grok AI to generate deepfake images undressing women and children, critics are demanding action. Specifically, many expected Apple and Google to ban X for violating strict developer guidelines regarding offensive and harmful content.
However, no such ban has occurred. This inaction has led to sharp accusations from industry observers, who argue that tech leaders Tim Cook and Sundar Pichai are displaying a lack of moral courage. The allegation is simple: these CEOs are allowing X to remain operational because they are terrified of the political and economic repercussions of crossing Elon Musk. Despite having clear rules against “content that is… creepy” or in poor taste, the gatekeepers of mobile tech appear to be prioritizing power dynamics over user safety and their own stated principles.
