In a landmark move that signals a dramatic shift in Big Tech’s energy strategy, Meta has signed agreements with three major players in the nuclear sector to secure a staggering 6+ gigawatts (GW) of power.
The agreements involve a mix of established and emerging energy leaders. While Vistra, a powerhouse in the independent power generation space, brings massive scale to the table, the inclusion of TerraPower (founded by Bill Gates) and Oklo highlights Meta’s interest in advanced nuclear solutions.
This deal underscores the immense energy requirements of training and deploying next-generation AI models and operating hyperscale data centers. Unlike traditional renewables, nuclear power offers a carbon-free, stable, and constant baseload power source—often referred to as “always-on”—which is critical for data centers that cannot afford intermittency.
By securing this capacity now, Meta is effectively future-proofing its infrastructure against grid instability and meeting aggressive sustainability goals. This move places Meta alongside competitors like Microsoft and Google, who are also actively exploring nuclear fission to fuel the AI revolution.
