The race for the ultimate portable gaming console is heating up. Intel has officially announced plans to build a dedicated “handheld gaming platform” around its upcoming Panther Lake processors. This move signals a direct offensive against the rising dominance of AMD’s Z1 Extreme and Qualcomm’s anticipated entry into the Windows handheld market.
Instead of recycling standard laptop chips, Intel is reportedly developing custom Core G3 variants tailored specifically for the thermal constraints and battery requirements of portable devices. Leveraging their advanced 18A manufacturing process, these chips aim to deliver performance that potentially outclasses their recently announced Arc B390 iGPU. With Qualcomm teasing Windows gaming handhelds at GDC and AMD’s Strix Halo looming, Intel’s custom architecture approach could be the differentiator needed to disrupt this increasingly competitive sector.
