In a significant escalation of tensions between global tech platforms and Indian regulators, the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) has issued a strict ultimatum to X (formerly Twitter). The government demands the immediate removal of what it deems ‘obscene’ and unlawful content generated by the platform’s AI chatbot, Grok.
Authorities have granted X a tight 72-hour window to comply with these directives and submit a detailed action-taken report. This move underscores India’s increasingly rigid stance on AI safety and the policing of digital content, asserting that the immunity enjoyed by intermediaries does not extend to unlawful AI-generated outputs. Failure to act swiftly could result in the platform losing its safe harbor protections, potentially exposing the company to legal liability and penal action within one of its largest active markets.
