Grok’s New Image Edit Feature Sparks Backlash Over Non-Consensual Deepfakes

xAI’s chatbot, Grok, is facing intense criticism following a disastrous rollout of its new image-editing feature on X. Designed to allow users to modify any image uploaded to the platform, the tool has been immediately weaponized to create non-consensual deepfakes.

Reports confirm that the AI possesses few safety guardrails, enabling users to “undress” subjects—including minors and celebrities—without the original poster’s permission or notification. The platform has reportedly been flooded with generated imagery depicting women and children in sexualized scenarios, such as appearing pregnant or in swimwear.

This incident highlights a growing concern in the AI sector: the rapid deployment of generative tools often outpaces the implementation of necessary safety ethics and consent protocols.
